Bidirectional Energy received permission to operate what is believed to be the first U.S. residential site combining vehicle-to-grid capability with an existing net-metered solar system. The project paired a 12.5 kW bidirectional charger with a 5.1 kW legacy NEM2 solar system in PG&E territory.
This case study will explain how the project moved from interconnection application to permission to operate, with particular attention to the metering and operational controls needed to distinguish solar exports from vehicle exports. It will examine the use of PG&E’s NEM2MT framework, installation of a net generation output meter, coordination among the customer, installer, utility, and aggregator, and the approximately $2,000 incremental cost of the metering solution.
The session will identify lessons utilities and industry participants can use to create a more repeatable interconnection pathway for V2G at homes with existing distributed energy resources. It will also address how lower-cost alternatives—including greater use of meters already embedded in DER equipment—could reduce barriers to scale.
Finally, the session will connect interconnection design to the underlying value proposition: enabling customers to combine V2H bill savings with V2G event revenue while giving utilities access to a measurable, dispatchable grid resource.
