This pre-conference Basics Class will provide a practical introduction to vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and bidirectional charging, from the technology itself to the standards, markets, and policies needed to enable deployment at scale. The session will begin with an overview of bidirectional charging technologies and the current state of the V2G market.

Tim Zgonena, Principal Engineer at UL, will then provide a deeper look at the technical standards, certification requirements, and communications protocols that must work together to create a complete bidirectional charging system capable of safely providing grid services. Tim brings more than three decades of experience at UL and participates in numerous IEEE, IEC, and National Electrical Code technical committees related to distributed energy resources and grid interconnection.

The Basics Class will conclude with Steve Letendre, PhD, Senior Advisor to the Vehicle-Grid Integration Council (VGIC) and Founder and Editor of V2G News, providing an overview of the policy, regulatory, and market frameworks needed to unlock the substantial energy-storage potential of parked EVs. Drawing on his work in VGI policy, utility programs, interconnection, regulatory proceedings, and industry analysis across the United States, Steve will highlight the key barriers and emerging approaches shaping the transition from V2G demonstrations to broader commercial deployment.
